With the starting of this years NBA Western Conference Finals upon us this evening, we at The Basketball Journal are looking forward to what looks to be a thrilling series between the LeBron James lead Lakers and the Denver Nuggets power duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokić.
Here are the highlights from the August 10, 2020 Lakers / Nuggets game:
In honor of tonight’s Conference Finals tip-off, we present another edition of “The BEST game”; this time looking at the best game these two franchises have played against each other (with a peek at some of the worst).
With a twist..
This time we’ll look at two of their best games; one regular season and one playoff game.
This is a “big brother v.s. Little brother” match up from a historical perspective with the Denver Nuggets having played 53 seasons (with no championships) to the 72 season, 16 Championship Lakers franchise.
The best playoff game these two have played (by closest final score) was game 3 of the 1979 Western Conference Playoffs on Sunday, April 15th, 1979. The game was held at the McNichols Sport Arena in Denver and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (29 points) led Lakers defeated the Nuggets 112 to 111.
The win would close out the series against Denver and Los Angeles would move on to the Western Conference Semifinals where they would lose the series 4 games to1 to the Lenny Wilkens coached Seattle SuperSonics.
The best regular season game between the teams occurred only a year later on November 29, 1980.
In front of a crowd of 14,811 fans, LA power forward Jamaal Wilkes took control for the Lakers with 30 points and 8 rebounds, while Nugget small forward Alex English led all scorers with 37 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists.
English’s efforts would be all for naught as his Nuggets would fall to the Lakers in heartbreaking fashion; Los Angeles 124 - Denver 123: double overtime.
This year’s Western Conference Finals is sure to be entertaining as the Lakers currently have 3 Players in the top 20 for blocks going up against the number two player in number of Triple-Doubles (Nikola Jokić).
